Dialogue
Therapist: Hello Mr. King. I see you’ve come here for some help with your fears? Stephen King: Yes, it is kind of ironic because I have a fear of therapists. Therapist: Well, I promise, I am here to help you, not have you fear me. Stephen King: I can’t promise anything. Therapist: Okay, we will start with you listing off your fears. Does that sound okay? Stephen King: Oh, I don’t know where to start. I’m afraid of everything. Therapist: First, list off the common fears you have, like a fear of heights. Stephen King: I have a fear of snakes, the dark, spiders, rats, clowns, death, flying, and closed-in spaces. Therapist: Good, now list the uncommon fears you have. Stephen King: I have a fear of not being able to write, squishy things, psychotherapy, deformity, therapists, as I said before, becoming like my father, and the number 13. Therapist: What do you do to block out your fears now, if anything? Stephen King: I write, and if I’m writing, I won’t stop on a page that is either a multiple of 13 or adds up to 13, like 193. If I stop writing, then all the fears come back, very intensely. Therapist: Besides writing, are there any other ways that you cope? Stephen King: No. Therapist: Does spending time with your family block out your fears? Stephen King: No, not at all. In fact, it only adds to my list of fears. Therapist: What about listening to music? Stephen King: It only brings up bad memories and brings up my fears. Therapist: Can I ask you a question? Are you scared right now? Stephen King: Absolutely terrified.
